The natives, or Dardani, are described as swarthy with dark hair and eyes. Many have immigrated to Apicarta, settling in the northern region of the country.
The Apicartans generally consider Dardani culture barbaric and uncivilized. Particular criticism is leveled at them for the practice of avorro, or "trial by lashes" and the killing of twin babies due to a belief that they are cursed.
Controversy arose during the reign of King Tristan, whose wife Deirdre was a Dardani princess. The immigrant Dardani successfully appealed to her to instate traditional Dardani laws and customs in certain northern areas, causing social and political upheaval.
