Maria was the wife of Prince Stephen Stirling. She was murdered, along with her husband and her infant son, by three assassins armed with daggers who stormed their castle during the night. The assassins were tortured, interrogated, and eventually executed, but they never admitted any motive or named accomplices. It is generally believed that the murders were orchestrated by Stephen's older brother, King Letholdus Stirling III, who wanted to keep the line of succession pure.
