The Old Kingdoms were a series of fragmentary monarchies which existed during ancient times in what is now known as the countries of Apicarta and Exekia. These kingdoms were ruled by both Exekians and humans, although in later centuries the Exekians began to enslave all humans. The Old Kingdoms gradually merged together, eventually forming the Old Exekian Empire.
Artifacts, documents, and legends abound regarding the Old Kingdoms era, with some of the most famous figures being Queen Skoga, her lover Arkady, and their dispute over which was the wealthiest, which sparked a war with a neighboring kingdom, Sylarat.
The Old Kingdoms were in a nigh-constant state of war with each other, often over perceived slights between one ruler and another. These conflicts were brutal, bloody, and according to the Mandorlin, part of the reason why the gap between the earthly and the divine grew larger.
